We're gearing up for America's 250th birthday here at Georgetown Cupcake and we wanted to share one of our all-time favorite recipes to bake at home for summer BBQs, picnics, and get-togethers.
Our “Burger cupcake” is one of the most fun things we've ever put on a dessert table - a cupcake disguised as a hamburger, right down to the sesame seed bun. It's playful and exactly the kind of recipe that makes a cookout table feel like a celebration. With America turning 250 this Fourth of July, we figured it was the perfect summer to share exactly how we make it. (You can also find the full recipe in our Sweet Celebrations cookbook.)

Ingredients
-
Chocolate cupcakes (baked and cooled)
-
Caramel cupcakes (baked and cooled)
-
Vanilla Buttercream frosting
-
Red, green, and yellow (or orange) gel food color
-
Sesame seeds
Directions
-
Slice each caramel cupcake in half horizontally. The top half becomes your top bun, the bottom half your bottom bun.
-
Slice each chocolate cupcake in half horizontally. The top half becomes your "burger patty."
-
Set a chocolate cupcake slice on top of a caramel bottom bun.
-
Divide your buttercream into three bowls. Tint one yellow, one red, and one green with the gel color, then load each into a piping bag fitted with a narrow round tip - these are your mustard, ketchup, and lettuce. If you don’t have a piping tip, you can use a plastic freezer bag and simply snip one corner.
-
Pipe a squiggle of yellow around the edge of the chocolate "patty," then layer red on top of that, then green on top of that, working around the full edge so it peeks out like a real burger.
-
Top it with the caramel top bun. Brush the top lightly with water and sprinkle on sesame seeds before it dries. Repeat for the rest of the batch.
Stack a bunch on a platter for and you have the perfect dessert centerpiece for any BBQ or picnic!
